Staying in Budapest...Help.?

Hi everyone

I've decided to be gutsy and do a bit of the lonely traveller thing :)

Have just booked a flight budapest but it seems really hard to judge where I should book a hotel. What would you call the exact centre of budapest? I really don't want to be miles away in some dodgy neighborhood, or on the 'wrong side of the river' sort of thing.

I want the same as most tourists really, best attractions by day and good safe pubs by night.

Any advice would be awesome!

Thanks.

The 5th district is about the best place for tourists, close to most things and the st. are pretty safe.

You will be closer to Vaci Utca, the big walking street and the river is close by.

Some parts of the 6th, 7th are alright but they have to be close to Kis Korut, Museum Korut.

Check out a Budapest Pass or Card it gives you access to public transportation within city limits and some discounts on tourist things.

I live in Budapest in the 7th district, it is ok but some parts are dodgy, best to stay where they expect tourists and you won't have too many issues getting in mix with rough people.

If I were you I would take a tour bus ride throughout the city, good for a general overview of places. You can always explore later on your own if you wish to.

Actually the bus is a hop-on-hop-off sort of thing. You can get off explore for a few hours and hop onto another bus that will take you back near your room.

Be aware that drink prices can be hard to figure out in some pubs, they usually sell hard liquor by the deci, even wine is sold by the deci so the posted price for a wine is only one deci, most glasses are 2 or 3 deci.beer is sold in 3 different sizes as well.

The exchange rate for the British pound is much better then for the dollar so you should be able to find an affordable place to stay without going broke.

You can find cheaper places to eat if you walk away a block or s from Vaci utca, they are really overpriced and the food is bland compaired to what real Hungarians like to eat. On Vaci Utca the food is watered down tasting for the tourists and so over priced it is not funny.

One can eat at home for a week for what they charge for a meal for 2.

I would also recommend staying in youth hostels, as these are cheaper, located in good areas, and you make friends easily. I have stayed in many youth hostels over he years, and have had great experiences. Try out 11th Hour Cinema Hostel which I think is in Ferencvaros, quite close to the centre. Budapest is quite an easy city to get around, with buses, trams and a really good metro network.

You can book a stay in this hostel on. Www.hostels.com. Here you can read reviews, get directions, check prices, check availability, see which types of rooms the hostels have, and you can also see the facilities they have. The hostel I said about was recommended to me by a friend who stayed there and he really liked it.

The lone traveller thing is brilliant because you only have yourself to please. You can do what you like, go o wherever you like, get up and go to bed when you like, and you don't have to curtail to anyone else. You can also be as fast or as slow as you wish. I have visited 21 different countries this way. Go for it. People will try and fill you with horror stories, but they are mostly rubbish. Thousands of people travel alone each year and have a great time.

Hello, downtown is on the Pest side 5th district and some of the 6th and 7th districts.Mainly the area between the big circle road (nagykörút) and the Danube. Check the ruin pubs e.g. in Kazinczy street. You can also try backpackers hostels, 5th district hotels being quite expensive.

The vicinity of the Oktagon would be good. The river is well within walking distance.
