Angelfish per 65 gallon tank?

A) I have a 65 gallon tank (L=36", W=18", H=24") with an Aqua-Clear 70 filter, which filters *obviously* 70 gallons of water an hour.

B) I'm willing to do one partial water change a week (and no more than one); and I'm willing to clean the entire aquarium as needed. With my current community that's already in the 65 gallon tank, I normally clean it every 3-4 weeks.

I'm only stating how devoted to cleaning the tank I am so that I you can be well informed when answering my question. So please no answers like "You can have 25 angelfish if you do three 75% water changes every other day; and clean the the aquarium, decor, and filter every week".

C) I have no intention of adding any angelfish into my current 65 gallon community until they start dieing off. Eventually, I would like to have an angelfish only aquarium with a small school of 8-12 tetras (Rummy Nose or Serpae etc.)

QUESTION: With ABC in mind, how many angelfish would I be able to keep in a 65 gallon tank? Thanks in advance!

PS: If need be, I would be willing to buy a stronger filter. Perhaps up to the AquaClear 110.

    One, 2-3 female, or a male/female pair.

If you add three, and at least one is a male they will fight. Three males will fight with each other, a male/female will pair and kill the third.

They only school/group when very young. When sexually mature they will pair off, and defend a breeding territory. A 3 foot tank cannot handle a pair of angels and any other angel.

Angels are cichlids and having a once species (basically) only, not gonna happen. Lots of angels in a 65 gallon will be disastrous once they start pairing off. It will be constant war over territory. I have seen a wall tank, 650gallons with angels. First look was great, but you start watching them, they do fight and one pair had eggs and they were ferocious. So, a small tank....... sorry. About the filter, I would definitely add another AquaClear. I would go with at least another 70. I have two on a 40 gallon and the AquaClear's don't have the strong current like others. As you know, they are even adjustable. Having two will eliminate water changes every other day. I do mine every 10 to 14 days. I have a 55 with a 110 and a 70. Same with that, current is fine. So much better with two. No stress about the water conditions and the tanks are crystal clear. I recommend two filters for tanks 40 or larger.

    - You could do 4-5 angelfish with tetras.

    - You would certainly have to clean the tank every week. They need good water quality. You NEVER clean the whole tank so don't worry about that.

    - Don't buy a stronger filter. You don't want the angels blowing around the tank because the current is too strong.

    - FYI Angelfish are cichlids. They can be aggressive to other fish and to other angels. You have to choose the fish wisely. You would need to pick angelfish all the same size and make sure the tank is planted with live or fake plants (make sure it's planted VERY well). I would also purchase 2 or 3 at a time and wait for a week or so before adding more.

I've seen it done 100 times, someone stocks a school of young angels in a 55 or 65 gallon tank because some inexperienced person tells them to. All goes well for 1-3 years, then they have an aggressive pair that attacks and eventually starts to kill all the other angels!

Long term, the first poster is correct. Short term, sure you could do a small group, but you'd be rehoming all but two angels in under 3 years, or scooping out dead fish.

an entire grown angel fish needs a tall tank. an entire grown clown loach needs approximately 50 gallons. A pleco that would not stay decrease than 5 inches is going to need an even bigger tank. Guppies will nip on the angel's fins. A dwarf guarmis could be high quality in there as could the tetras. you in all probability can no longer do 2 angels. In my 20 gallon I even have 4 cherry barbs, 6 cory cats, a million dwarf guarmis, and 3 rasboras
