Schwimmbad or Schwimmbecken (German)?
I just read a short lesson on LingQ and both Schwimmbad and Schwimmbecken were used, it seems, to mean "swimming pool". I'm wondering if there is a reason one was used rather than the other. Can these words be used interchangeably?

Schwimmbad is the institution. In summer people would "ins Schwimmbad gehen". die Stadt X hat ein großes Schwimmbad" means the pool and all that surrounds it is big.
Schwimmbecken is the basin/pool the swimming is being done in. "Das Schwimmbecken ist groß" only means that the pool is big.
Of course, there are situations when Schwimmbad can be used as synonym to Schwimmbecken: "Das Schwimmbad war heute sehr voll" could mean the pool was full of people or the pool and the lawns etc around it too. - but "Schwimmbecken" is always only the hole sunk in the ground, and Schwimmbad can be either the pool or the whole institution.

Both can be used. But Schwimmbad is more commonly used in German-speaking countries.
