Is there a limited amount of time you can have left on a British passport when traveling to America?

Hi. My passport expires in December 2013, does this pose a problem to travailing to the US between November 2012 to February 2013?

From my understanding, I will need to renew my passport if there is a limited amount of time left on my passport example 6 mouths, before my return date?

Additionally do I have to renew my ESTA application?

To travel to the U.S. under the visa waiver program. your passport just needs to be valid through the period of your visit. LOOK on your ESTA paper. There is an expiration date on there. Your ESTA can be used anytime in a 2 year period since you got it. If you got it more than 2 years ago, you need to reapply. See 8th question down on 1st site below. 2nd site verifies passports only need to be valid for the period of the trip.
