Robert and Toyia, You said "he". Every time you say that you are implying God is male.
Dawnkey, It is not important. It has no importance whether God is real or not or is male or female.
Thanks Pilot! That is a great answer. Very informative.
Teawitch, I am mainly referring to Christians being gender specific when referring to God. But it applies to anyone who is gender specific when referring to which ever God they believe in.

Generally, the Christian God is referred to as masculine. This is why.
All the references of religious and mythological images are to planes of consciousness, or fields of experience that are potential in human spirit. Long ago, there were systems of religion where the female is the prime image of God. Those cultures valued the importance of the fact that you're born of your mother, and your father may be unknown to you, or dead.
The birth of Western civilizations caused a psychological change in the character of our culture. During the invasions of 4th millennium BC, cities were wiped out by tribes of travelling herders. These were the Semites, part of an animal-oriented culture. With herders, you have killers, because they're always in movement, nomadic, coming into conflict with others and conquering areas into which they move. These invasions bring in warrior gods, thunderbolt hurlers, like Zeus or Yahweh, rather than the protective Mother image. The sword and death instead of the phallus and fertility.
In the Old Testament, you now have a God who creates the world without a Goddess. In biblical times, when the Hebrews cam into play, they really wiped out the Goddess. The term for the Canaanite goddess that is used in the Old Testament is "the Abomination."
Western religious society becomes increasingly patriarchal, for example, in popes and priesthood. and man, rather than a part of nature, has dominion over it, just as man is said to have dominion over women.
Interesting question!

Which deity are you referring to. The Christian/Jewish on or the Pagan Deities which have been around a lot longer in history...
@flubber yu... If MAN were created first MAN would only have one Chromosome and woman would have two. Since MAN has both then he would have been created second.

God the Father is male. God the Son (Jesus) is male. The Holy Spirit is not described in the Bible as a he or a she.
