Romney's debate strategy, is he trapping himself?

http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2012/09/mitt-...

Romney's campaign has said that he is lowering his expectations for the first debate. In fact, the Romney campaign seems to be doing nothing but touting how good Obama is at public speaking and debating.

Does anybody else find this strategy interesting? How can Romney's side see this as a good strategy? "Oh yea, Obama definitely has the advantage. I mean, that guy sure is an amazing public speaker!" Is his own campaign admitting that Romney has no idea how to deliver effective public speeches? Are they hoping to make people expect so much out of Obama they might think that Romney actually wins the debates because Obama might not then live up to the ridiculous expectations that Romney's campaign has for him? Honestly, this seems really foolish to me. Anybody else?

Update:

Who's demonizing anything? My feeling is that it is that Romney is painting himself as the less able of the two and that that seems foolish to me. It seems like he's trying to build Obama up with his own expectations. That's called voicing my opinion on a topic, not demonizing anything. Seriously, grow up.

Romney at the debate: "Trickiling down is the only thing to do since it has worked for decades!! Everybody should know by now that cutting programs for the poor to save money and give it right back to the wealthiest of us as tax cuts is the American Dream!!!!"

Reps, can we start finding policies that don't advantage only the super wealthy? Us, in the middle class, and the very poor, would like to enjoy a few programs, while we are responsible for $16 trillion of national debt. If you're going to send me a bill for it, can it be for something that helped the poor and not Donald Trump?

Oh, but it is a good strategy.

Lower the expectations and then lower the boom when you get into the ring

Besides, in the internal memo, the campaign manager said that most people's minds have already been made up before the debates.

It is what you do - the game

The debates are Romneys ONLY hope at this point

Let's wait until we heart the debate before we start demonizing anyone.

I think expectations are low enough.
