Urine smell in carpet... any Suggestions?
My 2 yr old in is the middle of potty training, and for some reason at night ends up wetting through her diaper.(I use pull ups on her at night). She has had very few accidents during the day and its mainly at night in her room when she ends up having one. I've tried switching to the overnight diapers for this time but they are too big for her and end up causing more of a leaking problem then actually helping keep it in check. She doesn't get anything to drink 2 hrs before bed to help cut down on the occassional accidents.I've scotch gaurded the carpet in her room as well. Everytime she's had an accident I've cleaned it up as quickly as I've found it(sometimes in the middle of the night when I notice it when I check on her).Yesterday she had one accident and its left a smell in the carpet that is as stubborn as can be and I can NOT get it to go away. I don't have a carpet cleaner,I clean all my carpets by hand. I've used baking soda on it,vinegar solution, chemical cleaners(which did less than the "old school" remedies, and just plain soap and water and the smell might go away for a short time but then comes right back after the area dries. I've heard to try Borax but that is one thing I'm not sure about how to use on carpets.I do use it for other cleaning things but I've never used it for carpets. Is it the same as using baking soda? Can I use some sort of solution of super washing soda or borax that might be more effective on the carpet or any other suggestions as to get rid of that smell would be GREATLY appreciated.
****Please note, the accident I'm talking about happened yesterday(found it yesterday morning) and this is the only one I can not get rid of. All the others were no problem to rid the carpet of.I dunno why this one time is so bad. And yeah it sounds gross but I've gotten on hands and knees and the carpet only smells in that one place now, nowhere else. And she is healthy too, just had a doc. appt today so there is nothing going on to make the smell so strong that is due to her health(just wanted to add that in there). Thanks so much for any help =)

The real problem is the pad underneath the carpet, it tends to act like a sponge and gives up the liquid and orders very slowly.
If it were me, I would go and rent a cleaner form the grocery store. They have special cleaners there designed for urine and above all..the cleaner has a vacuum device to power extract ALL liquid.
After you clean the rug, and it drys..toss down some cheap padded floor mats in the areas that need watching.

I've heard that Odor Zyme works well for fresh urine and spot treatments. It's an enzyme based stain remover you can use on carpets, walls, floor, mattresses hardwood, and more. You just spray the product on the affected area and make sure that the whole area is saturated with the product. This ensures that the cleaner gets to the core of the smell and stain.
There's some great reviews at the source below. You don't even have to use this just for urine. You can have it on hand to protect against vomit, food/drink, and mold.

You do not say what carpet cleaner you tried but it has to have the enzyme cleaner in it to work for urine. It did go down into your padding and that is why you can smell it. In order to get rid of it you would need to wet the carpet enough to get to the padding plus the surrounding area as it spreads. Think of wetting a sponge and it would be the same concept. In order to completely get rid of it you should rent a machine or ask soneone to borrow theirs. If you soak the carpet to what is needed to clean it, it will not dry and ultimately you could spread the odor.

You can try to use SUN (Severe Urine Neutralizer) Concentrate - Complete Urine Odor Remover and you can find it at removeurine.com or at amazon. Its not only limited to removing urine odor of pets but also any type of smell like the urine of your 2 yr old.
I just sprayed a mixture of it on the affected part, let it stayed for quite some time.. for the mixture to be in contact and be absorbed by the affected area and after a few hours the smell was gone. Permanently gone I should say.. It doesn't leave another foul odor.
It contains an odor neutralizer that works on the molecular level to bind to and absorb all organic odors. Especially effective on pet urine odors. It can be used to effectively treat odors on any water safe surface including carpet, draperies, upholstery, pet beds, mattresses, tile and hardwood floors and more. It does a fantastic job of treating general odors in carpeting to help freshen up a total room. SUN works immediately on contact.
