Why are the nose of ancient Egyptian statues chiseled off?

Update:

I was actually referring to the granite busts of the pharaohs.

It seems far-fetched to claim that it eroded when the sheen still remains on more prominently exposed and protruding areas.

For the most part, they aren't chiseled off. Rather, the noses have broken off or have been eroded over time. Noses protrude out from the head, and are more vulnerable to normal wear.

The Sphinx of which I think you are speaking has not had her nose chiseled off jts just that as it is a proboscis and thousands of years the wind blowing sand around, sandblasting the entire Sphinx its just her little nose was the first noticeable part to be worn away.

    Source(s): Just something one nose.
