Spiritually speaking what do you think of this statement...?

...to study the self is to die.

It's from "The Book of Heroes" Miyuki Miyabe. I have no idea what the rest of the book is about, just something I grabbed off my shelf. What do you think, emo teenager drivel? Or is there some merit to this statement?

Update:

The sentence is just on its own on an other wise blank page before anything else in the book gets started. It's the first thing that you read in this book. So no context, IS the context. :)

Much merit indeed! There is no self but the false ego idea and until that is dropped the “you” is in changes of suffering. Mankind’s best wisdom humans have searched within for thousands of years for this false identity and all have come up empty-handed. Something that does not exist has no dyeing possible. http://www.katinkahesselink.net/tibet/anatta_jagar...

I am not familiar with the book so would need to read in context. However from looking at it seems to suggest that by becoming too self-absorbed we fail to acknowledge our maker and creator. Think about it in a different way.. If we want to be true followers of our Lord Jesus Christ then we must die to self so that Christ can live within us and work through us.

And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. (Luke 9:23)

I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. ( Galatians 2:20).

    This is my understanding

the statement is trying to tell you that no matter how hard you try to know yourself, you will never learn all there is to know about you. the only way you will know everything about yourself is if you die.
