After most of the original X-Men went missing after a mission on the island of Krakoa, Professor Xavier used his computer Cerebro to locate mutants who might be able to help.
In a valley in Kenya, Ororo Munroe was a woman worshiped as a goddess because she could control the weather. The professor tracked her down with Cerebro and revealed to her that she was a mutant, and asked her to join the X-Men, where she can use her gifts to aid the world. She agreed.
