Help for wrist pain while doing Yoga?

I have major pain while doing any yoga poses with my hands on the floor and my wrists bent (downward dog is a tough one).

1. Is this normal?

2. Is there a technique that I could try to help this not hurt so bad...or maybe I'm doing something wrong?

3. I am overweight... do I just need to put these particular yoga poses on hold until I've lost some pounds?

    Very good question!! Yoga oftentimes causes people pain and we think this is ok as we're getting results..."no pain, no gain" attitude. Yet yoga shouldn't hurt!! I was over-doing it for years, and actually doing more harm as my ego was in the way. I would definitely say "less is more," and that if a pose hurts, back out of it, do it gentler, or you're exactly right, don't do it until you feel stronger. And that's great of you to ask and notice. Yoga is about "yoking" yourself and really finding your inner strength, mentally and spiritually, too! Your physical body is just one component, so by honoring yourself by not putting yourself in a painful situation, that is really good!

    There are many poses I used to try to "fit" or look a certain way in, and yet they were hurting my arm that I had broken years ago. Now that I'm a yoga teacher, I have had to accept that these poses (downward dog is one of them) are just not as beneficial to me until I can build up more strength. So I do them gentler or just don't do them. I have enjoyed Bikram yoga classes as I didn't have to do downward dog, and the sweating part helped me lose lots of weight! Or try a yin-style, restorative class that is more gentle, yet really beneficial to slow down and get to know your body. All the best to you!!

    it would be the begin of arthritis. Go see a rheumatologist, and also you would bear in mind averting any hobbies proper now that purpose extreme flexion on the wrists. I get bouts of arthritis while I am totally careworn, and in many instances cannot manage yoga positions wherein I am balanced on my palms like that...
