What do you think of the EU being awarded the Peace Prize?

"The European Union has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for six decades of work in advancing peace in Europe."

"The award comes as the EU faces the biggest crisis of its history, with recession and social unrest rocking many of its member states."

This 'presentation' just goes to show how corrupt the Nobel Prize Committee really is! It proves beyond any doubt that the Nobel Prize is a political mechanism rather than a truly independent, open-minded and fair committee designed to recognize the cultural and/or scientific advances of individuals or groups of individuals for the benefit of mankind.

That the EU has received a Nobel Prize for Peace, along with Barack Obama and others, only goes to show just how democratic the Committee really is! Surely, if anyone deserved a Nobel Prize for Peace this year (2012) it would go to Julian Assange! This would be the obvious choice and if it went to public opinion I think many people would vote Julian Assange as their main candidate.

It's extremely disappointing to know that the Nobel nomination records are kept secret for 50 years and nominees are not made public until these are already given. Why is this? It just doesn't make sense! The very Committee seeking to award outstanding recognition hides behind the velvet glove of non-transparency, non-accountability and non-existence, as far as the public are concerned! Where else would we see such a set-up? The MOD, NSA, GCHQ or CIA? What exactly is the Nobel Management team really afraid of? Truth, perhaps? A real, democratic nomination list by the people for an honest, fair and non-partisan recognition by independent experts who haven't been brought and paid for by the powers that be!

In my opinion this 'Peace Prize' Award should spur scientists and experts in various fields to come together in a move to completely reorganize the Nobel management Committee and selection process. We've had, and are still living through, the Arab Spring....well, now it's time to have a Nobel Autumn by those who want to see full accountability, honesty, openness and credibility given to what should be a major iconic scientific committee that people can respect and believe in. At the moment we have something which doesn't fit into this pattern at all. It operates on the same system as the banks, Wall Street, the EU (funnily enough) and military intelligence! Is this something we really need or even want? Would it make you proud to be Nobel Prize laureate? I'd be surprised if some laureates gave back their Prize to the Committee as a result of this, but this is something which should be done, as an act of high profile defiance to a system which operates contrary to common decency.

Surely any Peace Organization would ban the sales of weapons to the Yemen and Bahrain where they are being used to suppress and brutalize their own people? Or weapons and military equipment to dictatorial regimes like Saudi Arabia?

Surely a Peace Organization would refuse to impose harsh economic sanctions on foreign countries as a means to furthering the interests of the western military industrial complex, in favor of helping these countries, and their people, first, with that motive in mind?

Surely a Peace Organization would refrain from using the misguided domestic policies which contribute to the larger Currency Wars occurring around the world, of which the EU is a very strong and influential player!

Surely, the vicious deflationary debt spiral of the EU cannot be recognized as an act of Peace but one of continual austerity, hardship and poverty for those countries which have been fooled, yet again, into joining an organization of economic and fiscal madness?

What a joke, as funny as the one where Obama got the Peace Prize.

No wars in Europe since 1945! Oh yeah, and what do you call Yugoslavia? Caused by Germany recognising its war time ally Croatia? The Russian invasions of Hungary and Czechoslovakia?

Who kept the Peace? NATO kept the Peace, they stopped the Soviets invading, they went in and forced Peace in the former Yugoslavia.

Maybe some are right by saying 'no war between nations', but only if you accept Croatia was not a nation and Bosnia was not a nation, Kosovo was not a nation, Macedonia was not a nation. In which case any intervention was illegal under the UN and NATO charters, so where are the War Crimes trials of the NATO leaders?

And what about the civil unrest? Greece, Spain, to name but two.

    What a joke.

The Nobel Committee have, for the second time in 4 years, brought the who idea and ideals of the Nobel Prize into disrepute.

I can't wait to see which of the 3 Presidents of the EU gets to collect it, what a laugh if all 3 do.

    Edit:

And while we are at it, what about the illegal invasion, occupation and puppet Turkish Govt in Northern Cyprus? Or doesn't that inconvenient truth fit either? EU citizens under a foreign jackboot, and nobody cares because the PR people won the EU the Peace Prize.

It's appalling how an anti-democratic superstate can be awarded the Peace Prize for reducing most of Europe into recession, getting countries into further dept, causing millions to be out of work without means to support their kids and family, for supporting anti-democratic regimes, contributing weapon proliferation in foreign dictators, manipulating the markets so that the rich get richer and poor get poorer, supports US drone attacks which is illegal, sells it's bonds to China, prescribes laws against the sovereign rights of any one particular member state which is destroying the so-called free-market economy, supports corporate/financial corruption, supports the to-big-to-fail banks but refuses loans to up and coming entrepreneurs.....the list goes on.

In other words it hasn't brought stability to Europe, it hasn't improved democracy, it hasn't improved the economy, it hasn't allowed sovereign states the freedom to govern themselves and hasn't maintained Peace....it's simply exported wars abroad!

    Farcical.

They have now destroyed democracy in about 4 countries which are effectively run by foreign economists, and the list is going to grow. There is every possibility it will cause complete social disorder in one or two countries in the near future.

But it is no more crazy than Tony Blair being made a 'peace envoy' to the Middle East.

Peace has been perverted: The combined military expenditure of the 27 EU member states is €194 billion. second only to the €520 billion military expenditure of the United States. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_of_the_Europ...

David G. Harrison, Sage of Scunthorpe, says there have been no wars between EU countries since 1939. May I remind him that 1939 was when the second world war started. And it went on for five years. Six in the pacific arena. Ending only after two atomic bombs were dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Good grief for once I am in agreement with Westside.

They seem to overlook the fact that EU has been at war, most notably Germany interferring in Yugoslavia by recognising whichever tittfarting racist tribe it did.

And then UK had to end the squabble.

    Joke of jokes.

It has helped bring stability to the region, and we have had a European war for over 60 years.
