A car is connected to a tree by a length of rope tied tightly. A 115 pound woman steps in the middle of the rope causing it to deflect by 15 degrees. What are the forces applied to the rope? What is the sum of the x's? What is the sum of the y's the force applied to the car and the force applied to the tree ?

First draw force-diagram, with all the forces on the rope. You will have to tension forces (T) which are equal, and the force F of the woman. The force F is equal to mg = 52.163 kg * 10 m/s/s = 521.631 N
We now that the y component of the two Tensions will equal F because the woman is not moving up or down (no acceleration in the y direction). So Ty + Ty = F => 2Ty = F => Ty = 260.816 N
We also now from the figure that T*sin(15) = Ty => T = Ty/sin(15) => T = 1007.714 N
T * cos(15 degrees) = Tx => Tx = 973.377 N
Final answer: The forces applied to the rope are two tension forces whith the magnitude T = 1007.714 N which can be broken down into Tx = 973.377 N and Ty = 260.816 N
The sum of the forces in the x and y direction is 0 because there is no acceleration. The system is at rest. The force applied to the tree and the car is equal to T=1007.714 N.
