Help with this genetics problem please?
You find evidence for strong directional natural selection over 10 generations
on tongue length in a moth species (increasing length across generations) that
feeds on the nectar produced in long nectar tubes of a particular plant species.
You find that there has been no change in the mean or variance in nectar tube
length in the plant species. Has co-evolution occurred? If so, why or if not why
not and what type of evolution, if any, has occurred?

In a population of dogs, the mean head width is 10 cm. You decide that only
dogs on the upper end of the population with a mean head size of 15 cm are
allowed to breed.
What is the selection differential?
Next, you allow only those dogs from the upper end of the distribution with a
mean of 15 cm to breed and their babies, when they grow up show a mean head
size of 12 cm.
What is the response to selection?
Give this, what is the narrow sense heritability of the trait?
THIS IS NOT HOMEWORK - THIS IS A REVIEW!!
Please help me better understand this - it's for an exam. Thank you so much - I appreciate your time!

You are in charge of estimating the mutation rate in an emerging human virus. You are
given a very old sample collected in 1950 that contains DNA from that virus as well as a
DNA sample of the same virus collected fifty year later, in 2000. You have the complete
genome sequences for both samples. The genome size of this virus is 20,000 base pairs.
There are 10,000 replication events per year. You find 2,000 single base pair differences
between the samples collected in 1950 and 2000. Assume the entire genome is evolving
under neutral expectations.
b. You find a vial that you know was collected prior to 1950, but you do not know the
exact year. Assume that the virus always has the same mutation rate. You sequence the
genome of this virus and find 10,000 single base pair differences between the sample
collected in 1950 an this sample that was collected at the unknown time. When do you
estimate this sample was collected and why?
Your help would be greatly appreciated! thank you

What is the value of H (heterozygosity) for a population of pupfish in Hardy-Weinberg
Equilibrium for a microsatellite locus that has 8 alleles and the following frequencies of
homozygotes in the population: A1A1 = 0.01, A2A2 = 0.01, A3A3 = 0, A4A4 = 0.05,
A5A5 = 0.07, A6A6 = 0.01, A7A7 = 0.02, A8A8 = 0.03?
If you could explain this to me it would really help - this is NOT my homework - I am reviewing for a test!! Thank you

The Galapagos hawk has a polyandrous (one female, many male) mating system, in
which a single female controls a harem of males and is the sole mother of all babies in
that social group, which can contain up to 8 males, but there is only a single baby
produced in each year. In another species, the Swainson’s hawk, a single male and female
pair up and have a single baby in each year.
a. Assuming all else is equal, which species is likely to have the larger Ne and why?
b. Which species will lose heterozygosity more quickly and why?
Thanks!
1 AnswerBiology8 years agoHelp with genetics about alleles?
You find after conducting a genome sequencing study on a population of 1000 humans
that two alleles at two different loci have a D (or LD) value of 1. However, some
detective work shows that the alleles at each locus involved are not on the same
chromosome.
a) Are alleles at these two loci physically linked? Why? (please explain so I understand this better..)
b) Are the alleles in linkage equilibrium or disequilibrium and what is a possible evolutionary mechanism that could explain this pattern?
Your help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!! (This is not homework - I am studying for an exam)

A study is done on giving men with osteoporosis human growth hormone with calcium and vitamin D3. This is thought to halt the fall in bone density and help build bone density. Bone density was measured by a continuous Z-score. The study contains a total of 100 patients and is designed so that alpha=0.05, and beta=0.8 for an effect size in which Z changes by 1.5 units between the treatment and the placebo groups. How many patients would they need in the study to make beta=0.8 for change of 0.5 units in Z?
Thank you!

1 AnswerMathematics9 years agoStatistics Problem, how to do this?
A Randomized Controlled Trial is carried out to determine the effectiveness of a new treatment for a condition. 10 patients are assigned to the treatment group and 10 patients are assigned to an untreated control group. At the end of the trial, 5 untreated patients have died and 1 treated patient has died. State your hypotheses in appropriate form. Use statistics to test these hypotheses. Do you think the
treatment is effective, why?
How do I do this using the binomial coefficient? Please help, thanks!
