There are many things that happened in the past for which the only evidence is the written word. Why don't you demand "tangible, verifiable" evidence for those also? Do you understand the way the study of history works? Historians *have* to be open to all forms of "evidence" for events, otherwise nothing could be accepted as having actually happened.
