travelling with a laptop.?

I am going abroad (from the UK) with a laptop for the first time. Could someone please tell me how one uses wiifi? The hotel I am going will have it. Just wondered how it works? Do I just turn on the laptop and be ready to go, or do I need a password?

Update:

Another thing. A couple of answerers have mentioned a wiifi card. What is one of those? And where does one find one and what does one do with it?

And is it true, if I have a 3 dongle do I still need it while I am away? And does it use up more credit because I am away if I did use it?

Sorry, am a computer ignoramus. Self taught mostly!

Usually, if the hotel has free guest WiFi, the hotel reception will provide you with a WiFi password when you check in - ask if they do not.

Some places have pay-for-use WiFi, in which case you usually don't need a password to connect but cannot browse beyond their payment web page until you have bought a day or week of access.

If you need to be on line a lot, it's worth checking WiFi pricing before selecting a hotel - some charge so much it's cheaper overall to get a better hotel that has free WiFi.

Some that normally charge may give it you free if you buy a room upgrade.

If a password is required the hotel will tell you what it is. Others have cards with a code, and some do not use encryption or any other security, in which case be very careful what you type. This means make sure any credit card or banking details are only given to sites with the https:// url, not on any with http:// as the details you type are otherwise sent in plain text and readable by anyone with a wireless sniffing program.

You only need a wifi card if your computer is not compatible with wireless technology. Wherever you are in the world, the normal procedure is, your computer will detect the signal of the local network, if you have the password, you can access the internet. If you are staying at a hotel, it's provided, if not, there are normally inexpensive ways of finding temporary mobile technology. Hope that helps.

turn on laptop. turn on wifi card (will have a button or switch on your laptop that has a antennae or signal bar logo on or next to it). ask hotel desk people for name of their "wifi hotspot" and password if there is one. if on Windows look at bottom right of screen and you should see an icon next to the time that looks like cell phone bars. click on that and if your wifi card is on you will see a list of "hotspots". find the hotels "hotspot name" and click on it. it will have a button to "connect". click on that. if there is a password, a popup will ask you for it. type in the password the hotel people gave you and click "OK". a green bar will appear and slide across the screen for a second and then the signal bars will turn white and tell you the strength (just like a cell phone). test the connection by going to google.com in a web browser. if all is well google will appar and KABOOM that's right now you have interwebz. all the crazy tentacle porn just waiting for you. if you have a mac buy a better computer.

It depends - since it's a hotel you're probably going to need a password but I presume they offer that free; you'll need the name of the network and the password, it'll be as you would if you had only just got the internet at your house.

Hello. When you get to the hotel , there is usually a book on a table. Just look through it and find the " wifi " section. Or , when you get there , just call or go to the receptionist and ask about it. :)
