50w at 6 Ohms, what would it be at 8 ohms?
Hi There,
I have an amp and a pair of JBL Control Ones. They are 8 ohm speakers that can handle up to 100w peak, 50w continous. I also have a 50w amp at 6 ohms, how much power would it output to these 8 ohm speakers?
Thanks
Louis

In theory about 37.5 watts in 8 ohms. To get 50 watts in 6 ohms you need about 17.33 volts. That's 17.33 / 6 = 2.88 amps. Then 2.88 amps x 17.33 volts is about 50 watts. 17.33 volts / 8 = 2.17 amps. Then 2.17 amps x 17.33 volts is about 37.5 watts. The problem is that your amplifier is under a different load and will have a different maximum voltage potential. With 6 ohms it's limited to 17.33 volts and 50 watts. With an 8 ohm load it will be capable of slightly higher voltage. How much more is an unknown depending on the power supply etc in the amplifier. Worst case will thus be about 37.5 but reality will likely be slightly higher perhaps 40 or a little more.
