Good reasons to fire employee's?

Question

I am writing a bad news letter got a class, and I have to fire the accounting staff of a company. The real reason is that it will save the made up company $130,000 a year, but that can't be the reason I state to the employees in the letter. I was going to say that there service was no longer needed for the company, but I had to state that the work was being outsourced so that is not logical. It has to be a logical reason and the employees didn't do anything wrong. Thanks for your help!!!

The company is outsourcing your job and since this move is more cost efficient than paying you your salary you are laid off as of such and such date.

Seriously... You NEVER give a reason for laying people off. In an at will State it is important that the lay off is "at will" and can not have a legitimate or illegitimate reason because then you imply that you are required to give a good reason for the action and it is no longer an "at will" act.

"You are laid off as of such and such date" is all you tell the employees affected by the lay off. Preferably done at the end of the business day on Friday. Give them enough time to pack up their personal belongings and make sure to receive any keys and company credit cards before you hand them their pink slip, last pay and severance package.

The real world is a brutal place, isn't it?

You are not firing them....you are laying them off.

You only need to state that for reasons of the financial health of the company you must let them go.
You will provide them with an excellent reference upon request.
