MOT, can I ask them not to do the emissions test?

OK, so my Diesel Mondeo is going for its MOT tomorrow, I've booked it in 5 months early as I know there are a few problems with it. I wanted to see what sort of money needs to be spent on it before doing the cambelt, as I don't wanna spend £200 on the cambelt only to find it fails on £600 worth of other stuff as I won't be having it done so that £200 went down the toilet.

The car is going to fail anyway, so can I ask the tester not to undertake the emissions test? I know on the FAQ on the VOSA website, it says the tester is supposed to ask you when the cambelt was last changed but I've never been asked.

No. If you want an actual MOT they must do an emissions test.

Ask them if they can do a pre-MOT instead.

You could ask them to not do an MOT, but to do an inspection of all the items that are included in an MOT except for the emissions test, and give you a report on what the car would fail on if they did do an MOT.

This is common practice in Northern Ireland where all MOTs are carried out by government inspectors at government test centres which do not provide any repair services. Many car owners will take their car for a "pre-MOT inspection" at a local garage a week or so before the test, giving them time to get get any necessary repairs done before the test appointment.

Once you ask them to do an MOT, they have to do the full test, and have to issue a pass or fail notification.

I've heard some rubbish talked about MOTs but you're a star mate. You say you know it has problems-like what? are you driving a dangerous car?

Why don't yo want the emissions test doing? you didn't tell us.

Cambelt?? NOTHING at all to do with the MOT.

Sounds like you need to junk the car if it's as bad as you suggest.

An Emission Test is mandatory, and must be tested, otherwise you will not get an MOT cerificate. I have been having MOT tests since it became law, and I have never been asked when the cambelt was last changed.

You would have to ask the garage to do the MOT test but not actually as a real test with the emmisions ommitted. You would not get a pass or fail but there is no reason why they could not give you all of the other failure and advisories as if it was a real test.

there's no thank you to tell if a head gasket failure might make the emissions exceed the mot parameters. i've got had vehicle overheat for the period of an emissions attempt with none damaging outcomes to the attempt. all and sundry who can provide to pay a million/2 a bill IS accepting duty to 3 diploma, in any different case that they had supply you no longer something. you could flow to any Mot station and ask for a replica of the advisory sheet because of the fact the whole gadget is computerised. remember a number of the products on it ought to have been fixed already. Emission attempt effects are given to the vehicle presenter after the Mot and are not required to be handed directly to a sparkling proprietor. on the top of the day, an Mot is barely based on the time that the vehicle became into checked.

You can ask, but the only person who can tell you if he'll comply is the MOT tester.

Once the car has failed an official MOT it will be logged so on the DVLA website and as such considered unroadworthy. Far better to ask for a pre test report

There's no harm in asking but I'm pretty sure it's a requirement for an m.o.t
