An elderly colleague has a stair lift fitted by a well known uk company, which has just one years warranty .?
He has been told that an extended insurance warranty is £590 for one year or £1,400 to cover 5 years. If the lift is used as much as four times a day - a total travel of about 15 metres,- that is a yearly total of 5,495 mtrs. Which is much less than 5 Miles! I feel that if this is the case, there must be many older Pensioners throughout the Uk who are being exploited. That is more expensive than an insurance warranty for a motor vehicle or any other product I can think of. Maximum speed of the lift is just abour half walking pace with no chance of colliding with another! The company do a hard sell for the extended warranty for which after all is a low volt battery vehicle. There seem to be no ready way of finding a suitable lift engineer for the item and the company does not issue a DIY service manual that could be used by a capable family member in an emergency. Is there anywhere that an out of employment person could train in this fieild - if so they could set up their own business? ARE THERE ANY QUALIFIED STAIR LIFT ENGINEERS AVAILABLE TO DO THE SERVICE FOR A PAYABLE FEE on the spot.. IF NOT THERE COULD BE A GOOD OPENING FOR a QUALIFIED REDUNDANT ENGINEERS TO SET UP WHAT COULD BE A VERY WELCOME PROFITABLE BUSINESS. Must be better than Window cleaning. Hope I have given someone a useful idea. Too old myself now.

When the PFI fiasco has died down, extended service warranties will be the next misselling bonanza for the claims companies. An extended service warranty is a form of insurance and you are only allowed to flog insurance policies to people who need them. Under the Supply of Goods and Services Act, the equipment installed has to be fit for purpose. A stair-lift that breaks down in 1 or even 5 years of normal use is not fit for purpose and the customer has a statutory right to a repair or replacement. So nobody actually needs an extended service warranty.
The mechanics of a stair lift are not that complicated. However, it involves electrical equipment so you need to be a qualified electrician to work on them.

My mother had a reconditioned stair life, bought 12 years ago for £1,800. After the initial one year warranty she paid £100 year to have it covered for all repairs and the seller came out annually to check it and lubricate it (it also covered a full replacement if it could not be repaired.) That was £2 per week - near enough. After 10 years she decided she wouldn't pay that charge any more as she thought it was a lot of money.
As you can imagine, we, her children, thought that it would break down the following week. Much our surprise it continued to work well and eventually 'died' a few days after she was admitted to hospital last year when someone else decided to use it. Mum herself died the following week.
She had her money's worth I'd say.

1400 pounds for 5 years sounds about right. Might the 590 for one year be a mistake?

Seems a bit steep to me. Be careful if you intend to take steps over this issue,as you may finish up going nowhere.

"Old pensioners" have nothing to do with the issue.
If there's money to be made, who cares who the victim is, someone will be hurt by it..
