What is the proper name for those machinery equipment nuts which have a nylon component to them.?
A mechanic has used such a nut instead of the original nut with split pin when replacing a drag link on my car. Is such a metal/nylon nut as efficient as a nut with split pin.

The common name is "nylon insert lock nut". The insert might be a different type of plastic, but nylon is the common name.
Is it as good as a castle nut with split pin? A better question to as is, will it perform sufficiently? They definitely work better than lock washers. I've never seen one vibrate loose. Specialty ones are used on aircraft, which is a most-demanding application.
