Air coming from oil cap, good or bad?

I went to look at a car to purchase today. 2000 VW GTI 1.8T 5 speed.

I pulled off the oil filler cap to check for smoke. I heard that smoke or "blowby" coming from the cap is bad. The car was still cold when i did this. No smoke came out but a ton of air was.

Should i be worried if it's just air with no smoke?

Does it matter that the car wasn't warm yet?

Yes it matters that it wasn't`t warmed up. By the way, the`air`was blow-by and all engines do this to some extent.

It's a normal condition. The crankcase pressure is released through the pcv valve when you take the oil cap off it vents through the oil cap because it's a bigger opening.
