Wanted to avoid trench warfare - hence reliance on tanks. Aircraft and hence air superiority was also recognised as being key. At sea the submarine was devleoped into an effective force in the Battle of the Atlantic.
There was alot more reliance on smart technology - Radar, Ultra etc.
And both sides would thirst after super weapons which would be decisive - the Nazis with the V weapons and the USA with the Atomic Bomb.
