Sad news. Carmen Basilio dies at age 85?

http://msn.foxsports.com/boxing/story/carmen-basil...

He was one of the Greats. One of my favorite boxers of the 1950s, I never got to see his fights with Sugar Ray Robinson, but I seen many of his other fights with Tony DeMarco and Kid Gavilan among others. He was a amazing boxer and an example of a gentleman. He will be missed and all future boxers should look to him as an example of what a boxer should be.

Rest In Peace Carmen. You were truly a legend. You fought all the greats. They do not make boxers like Carmen Basilio anymore. He even beat the incomparable Sugar Ray Robinson.

That is really sad news. Carmen Basillio was one of the toughest and most determined fighters of all time and is well known for defeating the great Sugar Ray Robinson. The Onion Farmer was a good man and was also a Marine and will certainly be missed but remembered fondly by boxing fans all over the world. RIP Champ.

I live in Central New York, and like our paper here said...he is "our greatest boxing champion". He had 4 fight of the years in a row. 2 vs Sugar Ray Robinson. He truly "beat the best". He had a very underrated style as he'd approach like a crab and take a lot of shots (hence the bruises) to give a flurry or fury. Bert Sugar called him the most offensive fighter ever. He was a true old school warrior. I was glad to have the honor to meet him twice at the Boxing Hall Of Fame. RIP

He outlived his greatest ring rival Sugar Ray Robinson and many other great contemporaries. Finally he got the chance to join them in that great boxing arena in the sky. Rest and peace champ!

For most sports fans, the name is a footnote in boxing history -- but his "style" was underrated and the class he showed outside the ring made him a champion -- in the Game of Life.
