2/3rds the women under 30 who have births are unwed. Are government programs really that good?

No judgemental societal rants please or I will delete the question again! I'm looking for numbers/material information.

I know that child support usually isn't all that much. And WIC is likely very comparable to Food Stamps. I can understand just wanting to have a child, though it's not something I would want to do on my own, and I understand modern relationship problems, so I'm just trying to understand current trends better.

Update:

Common Sense, I did mention child support, which if I'm not mistaken runs about 20%. If a man makes 40k, which most men don't I guess, that's 8k.. not a lot to live on. And any other several hundred would be about $250/mo food stamp/WIC, no?

Update 2:

Thanks Ann for being a selfishy uncooperative stuck-up.

Update 3:

dd.. do u know the population of China?

Update 4:

Jose... they missed you at the bean farm today

"Good" is relative to ones position. Several hundred bucks a month may not be much, but to a young single mom with no education who will be lucky to get a minimum wage job, it may be attractive. Also, you forget about child support.

I know one single mother who lived entirely off the child support intended for her child. She didn't live well, but she could do it.

Add: Here's WI child support for example:

    one child --- 17%

    two children -- 25%

    three children -- 29%

    four children -- 31%

    five children -- 33%

So, maybe a mother gets $1,000/month from all sources. That's comparable to working 133 hours at minimum wage only now she doesn't have to work that 133 hours. She can sit at home with her kids instead.

The woman, I knew lived in a very cheap apartment for $350/month so still had another $600 for other things - Again, not a lot, but it allowed her to not work.

I think the math is also something many never consider - they just hear they will be taken care of by the government if they have a baby, so they do. I bet many are disappointed to find out how little that ends up being.

please. Societal rants? Whatever. Don't expect happy go lucky stats.

The current trends are our government has not acknowledged they are burdening married couples and people without kids so, unmarried couples can have children with the father being given a free pass. It is sickening and asinine.

The current trend removes a huge component of being a parent from the requirements. That is having a job. Immature idiots don't need a job anymore.

Also, we used to wait until we were married, which means we were older, to have sex. Now nobody waits. And nobody needs a job. Hence, tons of babies on the system.

There are still some of us, most people I know, who would never expect welfare to support our kids. But, we are a dying breed.

Try going to the doctor when they tell you your copay has doubled for your child. Then watch the next person say they have medicaid for their child, no copay for them. Then go to the dentist and

see the same thing. As a mother, this is infuriating. My kids has to pay $50 for her doctor appointment and the next lady has to pay $0. I do not know this woman's circumstances. But, in general, it is extremely frustrating. Why the hell did we wait so long to have kids if we could have gotten medical and free food? We wouldn't have waited if we knew that was going to be offered to us.

I would look at it as government programs respecting birth control access and education are that bad, myself.

people that complain about making babies for money have never lived on the money that you get for the children. Children are expensive; poverty sucks.

You want a real figure? Hows This?

Maximum monthly benefit (under TANF) for a family of three with no income living in New York City is $691. The corresponding maximum monthly benefit for a single individual is $352. New York State's highest level for a family of three is $703.

Ever try living on less than 10,000 a year in current dollars? Not easy. Wasn't easy in the 70s even when I only had myself to pay for.

This is positive information. Marriage is a sham for the man. It is still cheaper to pay child support for 18 years than it is to be married for 18 years and then pay alimony the rest of your life. Really this stat reflects the growing awareness of men that they have nothing to gain by marriage. Marriage is an institution that exists for the advantage of those who possess vaginas.
