Do you really dislike Laissez Faire?

Im in college now and since elementary school they have always taught us communism is bad and capitalism is good. They also told us laissez faire is the best policy. Why do you think otherwise now? Have we not learned spreading the wealth does not work and the government shouldnt be involved?

The saddest part about all of this is that its a bipartisan thing among these two party systems. One wants to help the rich and the other wants to help the poor. In my opinion the more they mess with the economy the worse its going to get. The farther we get away from the free market the harder it will be to get back to it.

I hope we turn to Laissez Faire before its too late but my hope in mankind is diminishing.

I have not read the book THE WEALTH OF NATIONS by Adam Smith(?)

But I've heard many times the mention of this book and this man.

I also believe he was the one who coined the term "laissez faire".

    (maybe I'm wrong).

Funny thing about this guy, from my reading he had a strong dislike of capitalists

but was a super strong advocate for free-market capitalism.

So I can gather that he rightly understood the undying value

of allowing the market(the people) to interface freely in commercial activities.

He has been empirically proven right to this very day.

Even Deng Xiaoping, the Communist ruler of China said:

    "let some get rich first."

Laissez-faire economics do reliably lead to an increase in GDP - but at the cost of a lot of pollution and human misery. They tend to resolve themselves into intractable capitalist classes and a vast suffering underclass. Dickensian London and the Great Depression are pretty good examples of what laissez-faire economics get us.

Obviously, communism doesn't work either. It kills motivation, stagnates growth, and forces people into what amounts to slavery, since the only motivation they have to work is a gun at their back.

But guess what - there's a middle ground. Saying "Communism is bad and capitalism is good" is like saying "Setting your thermostat to 95 degrees is bad but setting it to 40 degrees is good." We shouldn't accept the false dichotomy.

laissez faire works great when the economy is healthy and is a disaster when the economy tanks. Some government regulation is necessary to balance out excesses.
