I'm in my first semester of college and am writing a research paper about the salem witch trials, do I need to capitalize the S and W in salem witch trials

Salem, yes, because it is the name of a city and cities are always capitalized.
Witch, no. It's a common noun.
Sometimes events get their own name (such as wars or the Great Depression), in which case you would capitalize all of the words: Salem Witch Trials, and some people do use that capitalization. Otherwise, it would be "Salem witch trials," meaning the witch trials that happened in Salem. In no circumstance would "Salem Witch trials" be correct.
