Are you allowed smoke breaks at work? Do you think it looks bad seeing staff outside smoking?

I work in a bar/restraunt and we used to be able to go outside and have a smoke if things were quiet and would cover for each other. We have a new boss at the place and she says it looks bad having staff outside smoking and doesn't let us take smoke breaks any more.

Would it put you off a place just because you saw staff smoking outside?

We are allowed smoke breaks at work, I just don't take them.

I work as a cleaner, so putting my hands near my mouth while I'm working is not a good idea.

There is a bar, a restaurant and a café where I work too. All the folks who work there come outside for a cigarette, even the bosses. They will sit outside on a break drinking coffee, smoking and talking. Seems like a good way for managers to get to know their workers, I mean really know them.

I'm surprised to see people here getting so sickened by smokers working in a restaurant. It's not like you're smoking as you cook or dropping ash in their food. You are probably allowed breaks to use the toilet, so why not let you have a cigarette out of sight? It seems especially weird working in a bar. It's where people go to drink beer and smoke cigarettes, are they going to get precious about the guy pulling their drink having a cigarette too?

Yeah I hate it. People I work with are always going out for smoke breaks - 7-8 mins every hour means that they are having almost an hour off work extra per day that I am having to work and cover for them! Plus I think it looks horrible having them all cowering in a corner puffing away. Why someone can;t manage to have one on the way in, a couple during their lunchbreak and then once they finish is beyond me.

we are allowed smoke breaks at artwork, I do basically no longer take them. I artwork as a purifier, so putting my palms close to my mouth on an analogous time as i'm working isn't a sturdy concept. there's a bar, a eating place and a café the place I artwork too. each and every of the individuals who artwork there come outdoors for a cigarette, even the bosses. they'll sit down outdoors on a smash eating espresso, smoking and speaking. feels like a sturdy way for managers to get to nicely known their workers, I mean truly know them. i'm shocked to ascertain human beings right here getting so sickened by utilising human beings who smoke working in a eating place. it is unlike you're smoking as you prepare dinner or dropping ash of their food. you're in all danger allowed breaks to apply the bathroom, so why no longer help you have a cigarette out of sight? it variety of feels noticeably extraordinary working in a bar. it is the place human beings bypass to drink beer and smoke cigarettes, are they going to get advantageous with regard to the guy pulling their drink having a cigarette too?

It bothers some people. Fact of life.

More so in an environment where food is being sold.

I'm with her. Smoke on your lunch break.

Hell yeah, I'm not going to go eat at a place where the staff smoke. You can smell it on their clothes, disgusting.

As a customer, I do not like to see it out front. I usually don't go in or I don't come back. So your boss is correct there. Things are quiet until the 1st customer comes to the door (or in my case, keeps walking on by).

However, can you smoke out back? All restaurants have a back door. Ask if you can smoke out back. Even if you can be seen from the road, as long as the customers go in the front door only, then there shouldn't be a problem on your boss's part. Ask and you may receive (permission).
