Secession: Do you think it is a viable option?

According to our own Declaration of Independence; "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness."

If our government has become so intolerable to a majority of people in any State, why should (or shouldn't) they be able to secede and start their own government?

Please... no rude comments... I would really like to know your view and why?

Hmmmm... It is very interesting how people respond to this question. First of all, I never stated that I was FOR secession... I was asking for peoples' thoughts. There are a lot of negative people out there!

I was on the "We the people" website and saw a petition for secession from dozens of states and wondered why? It is a good indication of the divisiveness of our society that so many people in this "Land of Liberty" feel they are so mistreated that they have no option but to secede.

For the record... I am proud to be an American, and couldn't picture a country without Texas (or any other state for that matter), but I do feel there are enough people out there signing the petitions to hopefully give the government pause before they go and spend that next Trillion dollars, or back that next rebellion overseas.

As for the person who said the Civil War made secession illegal really needs to show me where that founding right was taken away.

As for my own opinion... All it took was a vote by the majority of legal residents in a territory to become part of the US. The reverse should also be true whatever the consequences to that State once it left the USA. Hopefully, they would be prepared for those consequences and have their new government ready to step in.

    The Founders were against the idea, as I've shown above. If you are interested in remaining true to the Founder's vision for this country, it's anathema to secede. I'd like to ask you this -- why are equal rights for all and affordable health care so "intolerable" to you? Shouldn't it be within the province of the government to provide these basic things to its people? I think they fall under "life and liberty," myself.

    A word to the wise. Even if it were possible for a State to secede, better have your new national government all set with a proper Constitution. There is no guarantee that the new government will be a democracy with all of the former rights of the US Constitution. How does President for Life, Rick Perry sound?

    The Civil War determined the un-Constitionality of secession.

    We are faced with a No Man's Land of options.

    Secession would not be viable for all states. Texas would have a good chance of success because it has deep water ports, its own power grid, plenty of farm able land and its citizens are rather independent and are not enabled like the east coast.

    it's not an optimal option, but it seems to be the only one left that WON'T result in a complete collapse of the only places in the country that AREN'T failing!
