It's better that it has a heater, but if you live in a country in the tropics (those near the equator) then it's fine. Mine survived for quite a while without a heater. They can survive without a heater, until fall and winter in certain places...
If you're putting two fish together (as long as they're of different genders), it's best that you get two transparent bowls and put them side by side. If the male spouts bubbles, then you can put them together. However, if you put two females together (males definitely cannot be put together), do the same, but instead of looking for bubbles, look if the females react violently to each other, like attempting to ram the wall. If they do, then don't put them together. If they're fine, then you may put them together, but I would refrain from doing so.

No, don't keep both of them together. Feed him betta pellets. You can find those as a pet store. And there's heaters for 5 gallon tanks at petsmart. You can buy one of those. Bettas are tropical fish so they need a heater. But females can be kept together in a big tank like 5 gallons. He wil survive without one for a few weeks but get one as soon as you can. Happy fish Keeping! Just feed him a couple of crunched up flakes per day. And then fast him for one day of the week.

He needs a heater, he is a tropical fish.
Beg on your knees to your parent to get you one now, it is essential. Wash the car, do the dishes, tidy your room, whatever it takes to get him a heater. Show them this post.
Also only feed him very small amounts once a day, Betta's have a tendency to over eat.
Change 50% of your betta's water every week and use a dechlorinator when you do.
I hope he has a filter...do not clean this out too much, just swoosh the sponge in a jug of dechlorinated water once a month.
I have 6 female bettas in a planted 200L tank and there is still some fin nipping between them. But yes it can be done.

Awesome to see another young betta lover luckily my mother bred them so I never had to beg or anything to get one or make sure he had good care. you are a wonderful fish owner already but he should be fine for now but as a birthday or Christmas gift ask for a 25 watt heater so you can help him and feeding he needs to have pellets to or you can feed him some other things sold like blood worms and normal worms in very tiny pieces. All in all he will survive and a long life without one just cause he has a good size tank so his water won't get to cold. Also on your other question yes bettas fight if only 2 or 3 but also males will fight most any number you have but females won't if you have over 5 and you would need to keep them well fed and in a planted tank lots of decorations and things and a good size tank for 5 you would need a 15 gallon tank and even males can have other tanks mates but no other bettas not even males and females get along. But any gender can go with other fish meaning if it dosnt have long flowing fins or long bright colored fins the bettas will think it is another betta and feel like it is trying to take their territory so he/she will kill it so fish like Guppies (only females) plateys (any gender) mollies (any) most tetra and shrimp or snails also bottoms feeders like Corydoras Catfish (you need atleast 3) and glolight Tetra I have even paired one of mine with a Gourami but they need a big tank.

To keep his water warm put his tank away from any aircondition vents, and you could make small water changes to adjust the heat once a day, take out a cup, put in a cup of hot water.

It is better for Bettas to have a heater. They are tropical fish and their water should be 78-80 degrees. Show the article, and any others you can find, to your parents. If that doesn't work, request a 25 watt aquarium heater for Christmas. If all else fails, save up for it. They are only about $10-$15. Your fish will be okay for a while, but you should try to get a heater for him as soon as you can. You also need to research aquarium maintenance. Your fish will be much healthier if you keep his water quality good.
Good luck, and happy birthday!
