Is it time to rethink Unions?

"As Hostess Brands on Friday filed for bankruptcy after failing to win concessions from its striking bakery workers, abruptly cutting loose more than 18,000 employees from the Bay Area and beyond,"

What good does a union do when going along with it makes you unemployed?

    The company has been in problems for a long time. Twinkies and wonder bread aren't selling very well ...

    Source(s): When Hostess went into Chapter 11 in 2004, it took until 2009 for the Twinkie-maker to emerge. It's safe to assume that with no new investors fighting for the future of the company, bankruptcy will be quicker in 2012.

    Unions serve a purpose so what needs to be changed is the Union Leadership. More modern economists need to be in charge thus stupid decisions such as Hostess would not have occurred. American Airlines is currently negotiating with the Pilots union and hopefully they are not as stubborn.

    Unions were created so that "big businessmen" give workers unfair working conditions. That rarely happens now (meaning pretty much all conditions are totally fine). I for sure think we should RETHINK them if not get rid of the majority of them and/or fix them. I also don't understand why a government job would have a union...

    Agreed. The road to hell is paved with good intentions, and Unions are subject to mission creep just like anything else.
