For those, who do not read Russian, the idea of the quote should be obvious from the two translated versions. I don't like either version, but if you gather the essence of the quote and can express the thought better, it will be greatly appreciated.
SLASH and HONEY BEE, thank you very much. I am looking rather into rendering either one of the two translation in the above stylistically "tighter". Which one of the two makes better sense/sounds better? If it needs a correction (not another translation), could you then do it? Thanks again

You can be happy with many different people. But there are only a few people who you really do care about and without them you would feel miserable. That is why those few people are the ones who are truly dear.
I think the second translation sounds better.

One cannot always be happy with a friend, with one true friend who always corrects the one, but for his own good. This one true friend can also be very annoying. But you have to realize that this one true friend has helped you tremendously. But this one true friend, who is for your own benefit, is essential and without this one true friend you would suffer.
