How do you jump start a car?
I bought a jump starter. When I read the instructions, they said, put the red clip on the positive battery terminal, and the black clip to "a clean part of the vehicle chassis, or other sturdy metal part". Surely that can't be right? The chassis is underneath the car, isn't it?
We tried attaching the black clip to the negative terminal, but the car wouldn't start. Is that really the right way to use a jump starter? Which parts would be safe to attach it to? I don't want my partner to get a hefty electric shock as he has a heart condition.
Help!

Please attach the red and black cables before you plug it into the wall outlet. At this point it doesnt matter if the black is on bare metal or the negative terminal. This is only a safety precaution (however stand back when you plug it into the electrical outlet). Batteries have been known to explode because of open flames or bad wiring. Don't ever trust any piece of equipment. Put the charger switch setting on "12V vehicle start setting". You are not trying to charge it, you are trying to jump it. Why don't you connect it for him? You are just as capable because it is so simple. Once the car starts, UNPLUG from the wall outlet first. Then disconnect the charger clamps off the battery terminals. Good luck.

Goodness, get someone else to help you....maybe even the place where you bought the jump starter....you can attach the negative to the battery negative post, but it is recommended to attach ground to a car ground to avoid sparks (so amatuers will not hurt themselves)... look near your alternator, there may even be an aluminum bracket marked "ground"..there surely will be a large bolt.
If you bought one of the $40 jump starters, it may not be powerfull enough to jump a completely dead battery....the good ones start at over $100....you may need to use jumper cables.
BTW...why did the battery go dead?
