Of course it's normal. Did you expect it to be healed in a week?
Tongue will be sore, tender and swollen for the first week. The swelling will be completely down in 2 weeks. Then you can go back to your piercer and change the long jewelry bar to a shorter one that fits.
And that's it, never take out the jewelry again.
You need to mouthwash ( non alcohol mouthwash ) every time you eat or drink anything else except water for the first 2 weeks.
Avoid dairy products ( too many bacteria ) and spicy food ( they irritate the piercing and hurt like hell ) for the first 2 weeks.
You also should not stick your tongue our or stretch it. The less the movement in the area the faster it will heal. If you want to show it to your friends, just open your mouth so they can see and do not stick your tongue out.
It will take up to 3 months to fully heal. Just keep the jewelry in, brush your teeth often and use mouthwash.

My answer is to let it heal and close up. The tongue is one of the most sensitive areas in your body. Do you realize that if a bacterial infection occurs that it could turn into sepsis (blood poisoning) and you could become very ill. Outside piercings such as the ears are safe because there is limited contact with germs and they heal quickly. Tongue, belly button are private piercings are dangerous to your health. I unfortunately had MRSA back in 2010 from visiting an ICU in a large suburban hospital. I contacted the bacteria from just touching something in the ICU which wasn't properly cleaned or sanitized. I was a nurse aide for over 18 years and dealt with all types of hazardous disease and never got ill from it ever. Please take advice from someone who had to have major surgery and take heavy anitibiotics. It isn't fun and I was fortunate now that I am MRSA free and completely healed.

That is completely normal! Just rinse out your mouth with some mouthwash, ( half diluted with water), keep that up, and you'll be fine. you're not done healing yet, it will take time.
