How do I change my computer password when I can get in by fingerprint but not by password?

My laptop has a fingerprint feature. The problem is, I am not accurately remembering my typed password and can ONLY get in now by fingerprint. I know the password sort of, but I have the punctuation or spacing wrong and I've tried many combination possibilities and can't get it right. Unfortunately, in order to change my password, it isn't offering me fingerprint identification as an option in the control panel (fingerprint i.d. is coming up only when I start or restart my computer). I am the administrator of my laptop and there are no other users. I now also have a problem with the start up (unrelated software conflict issue). You can only start up in safe mode with the password, so I'm getting worried that if I don't change my password, one of these times I won't be able to start normally, and won't be able to get into safe mode either. Argh.

Any ideas?

Update:

Oops! I should have said... I have Windows 7. Thanks for thinking about this... I haven't come up with a solution yet, but i'm still on the computer. I can't shut it down completely without the worry i may not be able to start it up againdf, but it's okay to sleep. The computer is only 6 months old, too! I can get help with the start up issue, but a repair place will need my password to work on the computer... sticky wicket, eh?
