Holes allow oxygen and other elements to pass through and this speeds up the decay process.

Because oxygen (O2) helps the decomposing and holes in the container allows oxygen through to the compost. This then effects the decaying/decomposition by a large amount and increases the speed. For example, when you bite into an apple, it goes brown after a short amount of time, this is because the oxygen is allowed into the apple and it begins to decay.
