    The nutrients from the compost will eventually soak into the existing soil and be absorbed by the plants. Please check out my blog for other gardening advice :)

    spreading compost on the soil between plants leads to better growth of plants, as they provide fertility to the soil and helps the root of plants penetrate deeper which helps in better access to ground water and minerals. Also it provides conditions for growth of eco-friendly earth worms which help in making the larger crumbs of the soil into smaller ones.

    Pyracantha is deadly.... as is GREEN barberry.... I'd be careful planting berries, as they tend to spread and never go away.... these are the two that are really sharp thorns that I know of... besides them, there's the sharp-pointed holly bushes.... of course, it depends on what will grow well in your zone.... perhaps even roses.... there's some climbers that are wicked!.... you're doing a good thing.....
