Why does my cat STILL have fleas?

We've gotten him Advantage for cats twice now, and he still has fleas. I could understand it if his fleas had been sever to start with, but they weren't bad at all! He doesn't go outside, or have any contact with the outside- he is a 100% indoor house cat baby. We couldn't get him outside if we wanted, lol!

But why aren't his fleas gone by now? we've given him the correct dosage, twice in a row, and both times they didn't kill all his fleas. I've used advantage on cat's I've had in the past and it worked wonders, including a time when my entire home was infested with them and nothing else worked.... I just don't understand it. His fleas were no where near bad, so why aren't they gone yet?

fleas are becoming immune to that stuff.

There are other alternatives that lots of folks don't like to hear but the bottom line is poison isn't always the answer.

This is what we had to do with a cat I had that was allergic to the stuff like Advantage, Frontline, etc.

    1. Bath him in ANY shampoo. BUT wet the neck area first or the fleas will simply run up to his face and hop around there until the bath is over and you cannot hold kittys head under water long enough to kill the fleas....

    2. suds him up and leave it like that for at least 5 minutes. You don't need fancy flea shampoo; ANY shampoo will do. I have used my own Oil of Olay body wash at one point when we didn't realize we were out of pet shampoo and the cat was already in the tub, wet and angry. Baby shampoo works well. Some folks recommend Dawn dish washing liquid but I have never used that.

    3. While you and the cat are wrestling around in the tub, have a friend or family member vacuum the house very well, sofa, floor, anywhere the cat sits in particular. The vacuum bag MUST be taken out of the house and disposed of or any fleas vacuumed up will just crawl back out again.

    4. at the same time, if your cat has a special cat bed, toss that in the washer to clean and kill any fleas on it.

    5. Repeat all this in 1 week to get the fleas that hatched after the shampoo, vacuuming and washing.

    6. Vacuum often, always disposing of the bag...some folks have recommended putting poisonous flea powder INTO the vacuum bag but I have not tried that yet. Sounds like a good idea though. Better in the bag than on the cat so the kids get poisoned.

Using a flea comb, comb the cat at least once a day. A flea comb has tines that are very close and that captures the adult fleas. You will need a bowl of rubbing alcohol to dip the comb into each time you catch a flea as they hop like crazy but the alcohol kills them.

You can powder your cat with diatomasous earth. It does not harm the cat but will kill fleas as they crawl over it. You can also sprinkle it on his bedding. It is available in health food stores...get food grade earth.

It's possible the fleas in your area have developed some immunity to Advantage. I've also noticed Advantage II has been less effective these last couple of months than before. I know this has happened in some areas with Frontline. You might try switching to Frontline Plus or the prescription product Revolution.

Also fleas have to bite the cat to ingest the flea drop products. Fleas are so tiny they can easily get into a house. They also will hitch a ride into the house on peoples shoes etc. Fleas spend most of their time OFF the animal and you may very well have fleas in the house that are lying in wait and haven't come in contact with the cat yet. When the cat finally comes close enough, these new fleas jump on and thus you may possibly be seeing fleas that have newly arrived on the cat and haven't yet had time yet to bite the cat, ingest the Advantage, and meet their doom. Spray the house with a good indoor flea spray that includes the insect growth inhibitor Nylar. Such a product will control fleas in sprayed areas for quite a long time and also control other insect pests such as ants too. If you use such a product in the house, be sure to carefully read the warnings and cover aquariums etc when spraying the insecticide.

You may need to have your house and/ or yard sprayed for fleas. Make sure the product used specifically say 'kills fleas', not all do ..also you need to wash the pets bedding at least once a month, and spray down things like the couch, etc. There are non staining, organic flea sprays for furniture. Flea products will not kill every flea egg and those not killed become resistant to that product's poison, so when they breed, their eggs will be resistant too. you need to use a different product now, the fleas are probably resistant to advantage poison.

Source(s): I had the same problem with my 3 cats, this is what the vet said to do..

Probably because you haven't gotten rid of the source of the fleas and they are breeding in your home. You can put dish soap and water in a dish and put a lamp by it on the floor to catch fleas. This won't get rid of the problem, but it will help you determine what room they're in. Once you find them, there are many products to get rid of fleas, but I've had the best luck with poweders.
