starter problem 99 6.5l td?
Started grinding gradually this past week. now it won"t crank at all. The starter is fairly new and works properly when bench tested the flywheel looks good and so do the starter gears. i added shims until it was no longer touching the flywheel at all. Would my old c10(305) starter work. what else could be wrong?

Even if your old C10 starter is the right configuration, it is not powerful enough for the high compression of the bigger TD. Are you sure the solenoid is strong enough to push the pinion gear into full engagement with the flywheel? Probably not. Start with a new solenoid, then replace the whole starter if necessary.

replace the starter, they will bench test ok most of the time, but once they are installed and put to work then it isn't strong enough due to bad field coils or armature in the starter. The td's recommend a heavy duty starter and nothing else will work in it's place ,like the c10 ,it will fit probably but not strong enough.,,,,,,,,,,
