Why doesn't my old computer see the CD (D:) drive anymore?

I'm trying to wipe my old computer's hard drive in order to be rid of it, and I have a CD boot disk to do the job. Unfortunately, the computer is not seeing the drive, so it can't boot from the disk. How can I restore visibility of the drive?

    1. Are you saying Windows doesn't recognize the drive when booted up? Or;

    2. Your PC won't boot off the CD drive?

    In BIOS, is the CD drive showing up as a device?

    If it is, check the BIOS settings, and make sure the CD drive is listed as a boot drive option. It will need to be listed ahead of the HD.

    Another possibility is your old CD drive has died. If you have another CD drive you can swap in, that will answer the dead CD question.

    It would have been nice if you had indicated what brand of computer you have and which Windows operating system you have installed. That information is a good place to start. Without this information, we're just guessing as to what the problem could be and how to try and solve it. The driver for the CD drive must be installed or updated in some cases in order for it to work. without knowing the brand of computer or the CD-ROM drive, it's impossible to tell you where to go for a driver and or updates.
