Should charity and aid be given in the form of British made goods?

just wondering why money is given to be wasted on arms.

Update:

Gabrio- this law is wryly comic when survival aid is spent on arms instead of survival tools, besides which we could do with the jobs.

Update 2:

Bob B- I was thinking more in terms of building and farming tools, ones that won't rust in tropical conditions, or dry out in the desert.Basics really.

I'd say this form of aid has a role, although it probably can't replace money entirely.

The ultimate aim of foreign aid is to get developing nations "on their feet" where they can function without assistance. The idea is that financial aid will help stimulate their economy and infrastructure to the point where they can do this. Aid in the form of goods will help, but ultimately it doesn't cause lasting change. For instance, if you provide aid in the form of clothes, that helps people for a while. But if instead you started up a clothes factory in the country you're assisting, that helps people and provides jobs.

The catch, as you mention, is that a lot of the money goes to corruption and arms. There is, unfortunately, no easy solution, except better control over what happens to the money.
