  • Is this genuine or a scam?

Has anybody in my area received a visit from a group offering to assess your house for free loft insulation? I ask because yesterday I had a visit from a young woman who flashed a cxard and appeared to be official. Not being up to date on what's happening in the area I took her as genuine and showed her the attic to assess since we have no insulation up there, upon which she declared that she couldn't assess because there was no access beneath the floorboards. I felt a hint of suspicion and showed her out.

Is the group she belonged to genuine or is this some scam?

I know I was foolishly stupid to let her into my home without a proper search of her credentials so I can do without 'silly old woman comments.' I just want to know if the call was genuine or do I report to the police there is such a fraudulent scam group operating in the area. Thank in advance for any help on this. P.S. Is loft insulation EVER laid under floorboards where there is electrical wiring?

  • What to do about a leaking gas pipe?

The house next door has been recently refurbished, but the utility channel which carries pipes between the house and street has been left open to the elements. A couple of weeks ago two blokes arrived and were digging dirt from the channel (said they were going to lay a concrete bed) and after they'd gone another man claiming to be an electrician arrived, asked about earlier workers. He then informed me he couldn't do his job of attaching a connection because the diggers had dug a hole into the gas pipe. He had bound it up for now, "but it needs the gas people to let in a length of pipe."

Who do I ask about this? I don't know who the owners are and cannot pay for the work to be done. The hole is bound with a bit of rag and is possibly quite dangerous. Is there perhaps an emergency service who can deal with this and prevent huge sudden damage?

  • Sunday morning plumbing problem?

The drainpipe immediately beneath my stainless steel sink has suddenly completely detached from the sink basin. What glue/filler is best to stick it back together?

Before you ask I was very surprised to find there is no screw fitting from pipe to basin, just a ring gasket of something that looks like cardboard, not even cork. Damn unit is even cheaper than the price I paid!

  • Mystery of the law email?

I have just recieved an email saying that I may have been added to police records. As far as I am aware I'm sure I have done nothing to cause this. The email gives another address for me to check which is 'not found' on computer, and is signed Dominic Weeks. Does anyone know anything about this? Had I better do something to protect myself?

  • What is the sticky stuff to add to sand and cement to stick pebbledash to walls?

The cold weather has played havoc with my outside walls and I'd like to repair them without a builders bill even if I make a slight mess to start with, but I know from sad experience that there must be an adhesive in the cement. I don't know which adhesive?

  • Why do people get ridiculously jealous of a woman managing her life without them?

My husband worked away from home for many years so I got used to other women behaving as if I was some sort of threat. Now I am a 74 year old widow of five years standing and am still the butt of jealousy and posessive behaviour. I am quite sure I give no cause for this, and I suspect it is supposed to be complimentary, but I find it a nuisance that I am constantly assumed to be in line for fancying some man or other, as if I were horribly lonely which I am not.

  • memory fault or deja vue or just a time lag?

Having written a phrase, paragraph or even a page: If it comes easily, and sometimes if I really sweat blood over it, I can feel as if someone else wrote it, even though I haven't copied a word of it. If you can help with this I'll be very pleased, because I've put up with this for quite a long time.

  • Does this look okay to you?Is there anything obvious that I've missed out?

Home at last. He worked halfway across the country for only three days a week, but coming home at the end of those three days was clear water and manna from heaven to refresh him, body and soul.

Christopher and Vernon were at the living room window, waving frantically. He saw Vernon turn away and a couple of seconds later the children were waiting at the front door with Shell, his wife of ten years, long chestnut hair blowing a little in the breeze, silky floral dress clinging to her long shapely legs.

David waved as Pyrus silently slowed to a stop, more concerned to miss a pothole close to the pavement than whether his family waved back. He lumbered tiredly up the short path, noticing the Laurel hedge was neatly cut, the flagstones free of the main road litter that accumulated from nowhere in a matter of hours. Vernon and Christopher grabbed a hand each, chattering, leading him to the comfortable sofa in the front room, while Shell closed the front door and headed for the kitchen to make tea and sandwiches.

He loved these homecomings. Whatever happened at work; whatever was to happen at home, he felt this first hour of arriving, meeting Shell and the boys again would be the touchpoint memory that would keep him sane in an old age of confused senility.

The boys bombarded him with questions

“Dad did you get my garage fixed? “

“When are you going back Dad?”

“Did the masked man win the war Dad?”

“The your garage is in the car. I’m not going back until next Tuesday. Yes the masked man won the war. He always does.”

Shell put a huge plate of sandwiches on the coffee table and the lads left him in favour of

    Marmite or Salmon Paste.

  • restarted writing. Anywhere near professional yet?

Pyrus waited for him, long silver body gleaming, her sensuous curves demanding the touch of a firm and gentle hand along the length of her. Not wanting to mark her he stuffed his hands deep into his pockets until he reached the door, then pushed the fingerprint button which opened it, fast and silently. In ten minutes he’d be buzzing along the Northern Road, cooling wind streaming through the engine, the smell of new leather and polished wood in his nostrils. Electronically powered gates opened at the moment Pyrus’ wheels started to move, then, a streak of silver lightning, she was off and away.

Very little traffic helped make his journey faster than usual. The updated chip in the computer made it a little safer; it was able to detect the smallest potholes and stones on the road and compensated by aninstruction to the car to avoid them.. David Langden lounged comfortably in the driving seat, chewing a mint, expecting to complete his journey in less than two hours, expecting the journey to be easy and trouble free.

It certainly doesn't feel like any sort of 'kindness' to be taken over instead of having all your normal contacts on the page.

  • Is it still illegal to run a commercial vehicle without an owners name on it?

I have noticed lately that there are quite a few vans and large vehicles on the road without public identification. I remember as a child being told that this illegal, just wondered if it is still so.
