Is it still illegal to run a commercial vehicle without an owners name on it?

I have noticed lately that there are quite a few vans and large vehicles on the road without public identification. I remember as a child being told that this illegal, just wondered if it is still so.

Update:

I am sure the owner's name (whether an individual or a company) had to be on commercial vehicles.

The registration only counts as official identity, not public identity.

Update 2:

I forgot to mention I was a child in the 1940s

When I was young it was definitely a legal requirement, but it was phased out some decades ago.

I'd guess probably about 1982 - that's when they dropped the requirement to register _all_ business names including non-limited firms and sole traders.

Prior to that, you could not run a business of any sort without the trading name being registered with the government.

Edit - link to the business names info and an example old certificate.

When those laws were in force, any business could be located from it's name, so having the name on a vehicle made sense.

Once the business register was discontinued, they would have been pointless other than for advertising.

It's never been illegal, there have always been plenty of commercial vehicles around without an owner's name on them.
