It was an unexpected success in being put through, and the suicide was an unexpected and unintended consequence of that success. Judge the act without hindsight and it was just a bit of stupidity in a sea of stupid radio with a truly dreadful result.

it was unfortuanate what happened but the djs cannot be blamed. there was obviously more underlying issues. if you believe they should be accountable then i guess you believe that all prank calls should be banned from radio. yet it wasnt the prank call itself it was the fact that they had a laugh at someone elses expense. I guess that means the end of hamish and andy show and matt and joes got ya calls. what is the difference with their prank call and playing a joke on someone?. Its a sad world we now live in that this misguided prank has been pinned on these people. Its not their fault but societies, this women clearly had deeper issues that were never addressed. and Paddy I'm guessing you have never made fun of anyone? how ridiculous

    Thoughtless.

Not sure I'd blame the DJ's entirely. The radio station should shoulder some of the burden for having that culture and the legal types for accepting and encouraging it...

Well I think it's a disgrace. But it's a disgrace because, apparently, people want to listen to that sort of rubbish.

If legitimate academic researchers want to interview someone on the phone, and record it for research purposes, they have to get approval from their uni ethics committe, then get written consent from the person who is being interviewed, who has to know exactly what it's about, and has to be told that they can withdraw their consent at any time, there have to be arrangements in place to protect the security of the information, and there have to be professional arrangements in place to support the person being interviewed in case participating in the interview triggers off anything personal / emotional etc etc. Journalists don't have to do any of this, as far as I can see.

To see this as a 'prank' demonstrates a level of immaturity and callousness that we shouldn't expect from adults in a compassionate and humane society. This radio station is a serial offender in terms of callous, abusive, and even tortuous 'prank' calls.

Read the article on the ABC website's Drum for more information about this - Mon 10 Dec: Prank wasn't funny long before it turned tragic. By PM Newton.Think this is the link:
