Would a spiral perm work for me?

I have always desperately craved curls. When I was little, my mom could accomplish them after having me sit in large curlers for several hours (of course at the time I hated them because I always managed to look like a mini Fran Drescher). Now that I'm older, I would love to have curls, but my hair is long and very thick. When I try at home, usually my hair isn't even totally dry by the time I take it out of the curlers, and if it is dry, I can't touch it with a brush at all or it becomes an uncontrollable mess (it also takes large amounts of hair spray for the curls to stay longer than about an hour. After my last failed attempt, my mother suggested I get a spiral perm. From what I've seen online, spiral perms are exactly what I'm looking for, but I'm afraid that my hair is so thick that I'll have the frizzy problem I've had with my attempts at home. Can anyone tell me if a spiral perm would work well with my very heavy, very frizzy hair?

My hair, like yours, is extremely thick and frizzy with the most unpredictable texture ever. I spent hours every morning in the bathroom during high school trying to tame it with either flat irons, curlers, or hairspray, and boy did that take its toll.

So during my first year at uni I decided I had nothing to lose and got a spiral perm. It took forever, stunk, and it made my hair feel like a horse's mane for about a week. I absolutely hated it. But gradually my hair started feeling like hair again, and I found that all I had to do to get the style I wanted was have a shower and air dry. Now, I AM IN LOVE with the perm! I haven't used a single styling product or tool for a year and a half now. I just shower and go, leaving the house every morning with big, bouncy waves. 0 effort whatsoever.

I would say go for it! You'll have to get your hair layered while you're at it so that the curls don't get dragged down, but that won't be a biggie. Also, make sure that you specify exactly what kind of curl you want - Take a photo with you when you go to get it done!

Oh, and be prepared to completely empty out your pockets. I was lucky to get a discount with mine, but with big hair like ours, you could be paying around $300.
