Yes. Applying the brakes when approaching traffic lights in case they turn amber is common too. Don't worry, soon you'll be breaking the speed limit.

The first time I took a car out on public roads with my provisional license, I ended up on the interstate and had to go 90 MPH to keep from getting run over by a truck.

I have since regularly been over 100 MPH and once in a racecar that exceeded 200 MPH. It is not the speed that is scary, if you're in the proper car to handle it. What I have concerns about is the unpredictability of the other drivers with which you share the road. You know, the ones who are texting in the middle of making a turn on a yellow light at 30 MPH, or the ones who are insistent that you aren't going to get into their lane, just because they don't want someone driving in front of them.

This is why they call it "defensive driving."

Not really scared but I felt uncomfortable. I had been over 40 mph on a bicycle several times before that so it wasn't the speed, but the sensation of having a windshield in front of me was odd.

Not really no. I learned to drive just over 25 years ago and after the first hour or so of my first lesson I was driving at 30 and 40mph quite comfortably.

Yes because I thought it was fast and I didn't know much about driving perfectly when I first drove.

Nope, it's common for women to be afraid of speed during the first few drives. But you'll get use to it.
