The only thing that is going to happen on 21 Dec is the Solstice, which happens twice a year, 21 or 22 Dec and again on 21 or 22 June.

The Solstice will occur on 21 Dec at 1112 GMT or 0612 Eastern Time (New York).

A solstice is an astronomical event that occurs twice each year as the Sun reaches its highest or lowest excursion relative to the celestial equator on the celestial sphere. For the United States it is the Winter Solstice, the Shortest day of the year. For Australia it is the Summer Solstice, the Longest day of the year which will be on the 22nd.

Dec 21 2012 is the last day of the ancient mayan long count calender (one of many calenders the ancient mayans made).We have nothing from the ancient mayans that says it's a doomsday, nor do we have any real evidence of that today. The media heard the doomsday theory and blew it up to global proportions.

Think about it, the ancient mayans created the long count calender accurate for thousands of years ahead (from their point of view). They couldn't make it go on forever, maybe Dec 21 2012 (winter solstice) was as good as any date to end it.
