Why are so many people calling for an assault weapon ban?

Because it's a small step. And this is going to be a voyage of a thousand miles....

Because they feel the pain of the tragedy and they don't know what to do about it. A reactive ban on assault weapons is one thing they can get behind.

Assault weapons have no real purpose outside of combat. There isn't any real, constructive reason for anyone to have one in their home. A good old pump shotgun is a much better home defense weapon. It takes no skill to use, everyone knows that sound, and its projectiles don't travel through doors and walls to kill or wound your loved ones.

Because the assault weapon, like the M-15 or AK-47 can cause mass mayhem, especially with a 30 round clip. But that's not the real question. Why would anyone claim to need such a gun? It can be for hunting or home protection. What, on Earth, do they want to do with such a thing?

Get rid of 'em. Australia did it.

cuz the media which is owned by private companies is heard these sheep in that directions due to that ridiculous sandy hook shooting. How the **** does their newly equipped security system fail??? Blaming Guns is simply the "quick" solutions. Its far more cheap to simply ban a gun and move on, but to provide all publics schools with competent security just isnt in the school budget and this corrupt gonvernment and state Gov refuse to provide schools with more funds so their picking the less costly solution, "HEY STUPID SHEEP LETS BAN GUNS :D YAAAAY But oh wait we still neglect our security for schools so now instead of a gunmen with an assualt rifle comming in, we have a gunmen with a pistol (which wont be banned ever, pistols) it makes no sense to bun a specific gun which a killer can simply buy a legal, trust me ppl u dont need an assualt rifle to shoot children, he could have done that just as easily with a pistol and many of less powerful Guns

Because they exist for the sole purpose of killing people, not animals, and not really for self defence, hence the "assault" part. There is no reason for citizens to own them, they only pose a serious risk to the safety of the public.

the 470 people murdered in Chicago this year aren't as horrific in the news as the 28 all at once in Connecticut.

it's all appearance and little reality. an old M-1 carbine is just as effective for a mass murderer as an AR-15 [non-automatic version]

because even gun owners go nuts, lose their cool, become depressed lose their jobs , marriage breaks up and they think suicide is the way to go but while im there ill take a few innocent people with me
