If a parakeet has a bound egg for long enough will it hatch inside of her?

I know, I know....I am trying to find a bird vet open on Christmas eve and if not I will find an emergency vet that will...but I would really like to know this.

    Nope....it'll die way before that.

  • GOOD GRIEF NO,

For an egg to hatch it needs several things, warmth would be provided from her body, but it needs humidity and it needs to be turned. If the egg is not moved then the yolk and whites will settle and stitch to the side of the egg making it imposable for any chick to survive inside. Even if the inside of a bird was a good environment for an egg, your mother parakeet would die long before the egg had time to hatch as egg bounding is fatal and it takes like 20 days for the chick to grow inside the egg depending on what kind of parrot it is.

Good grief, of course not. Basic Biology (were you absent that day?). The egg has to be incubated outside of the bird. Egg bound budgies that are not treated quickly usually die a horribly painful death. Even w treatment by an experienced avian vet there is no guarantee the bird will make it. Hope you are reading this after coming home from the vets office & that your bird is okay for now.

This is caused by poor nutrition: not enough calcium. She will die before you can get her to a vet.

Warm some olive oil - just warm. Drop several drops onto her vent. Where the egg is. Hold her until the oil enters the vent. Hope that this will allow the egg to exit.

Calcium in needed for her muscles to be strong enough to push out the egg. A cuttle bone is cheap and will prevent pain and death. Hope this helps.
