How do you celebrate New Year's Day?

Different regions and different cultures do different things.

We have ham, cooked cabbage (because it resembles money), black-eyed peas (to symbolize abundance), fried potatoes (just because we like them), and cornbread. There will be a clean shiny dime cooked in the cabbage. Whoever gets the dime will have good luck all year; it's guaranteed!

Then, the adults play poker while the older kids keep an eye on the younger ones.. The poker also brings good luck -- to at least one person. I still have the bagful of money I won last year.

Our family - will have their own celebration - for New Years.

This Christmas has taken a toll on us.

We will have a day of rest and hope 2013 will be a good year for everyone.

We will have a small meat and cheese tray - salads and baked beans for dinner - desert will be some of the left over goodies from Christmas.

We will watch the New Years Celebration - at Times Square - when they ring in the New Year.

Jodi - I love the clean shiny dime - part of your celebration - I've not heard of that before and it puts a bit of fun into your meal time. Ham and corn bread - sounds so good too.

Wishing you a Happy New Year.

When I was young mom would fix a good meal for us (kapusta which is cabbage for good luck) but not much more or different because we were still celebrating Christmas till the second week of January and visiting each other and looking at trees and opening gifts and attending mass.

Since my parents are gone and there are no grandchildren and it's quiet here I watch any parade that's on tv, have a nice meal and sleep.

My mother used to say that it's good luck for the whole year if on January 1 the first person thru your front door is a male. Also said that if you wash your face with a silver dollar in the water you'd be beautiful (haha, that was encouragement for us female kids).

Jehovah's Witnesses do not rejoice New Years due to the fact the celebrations originate with worship of pagan gods. Besides, new years is frequently associated with heavy consuming, some thing else that Jehovah's Witnesses do not participate in. As to your neighbors, it is feasible that they effortlessly had neighbors over seeing that people most often have day without work from work at New Years. However, I are not able to converse for them, and every person must reply for his or her own moves.

We will spend the day watching football and probably playing some games, my husband and myself that is. I never heard about the 'dime,' though I remember as a child, mom cooked the black eyed peas for good luck.

Tradition is for me to cook up some good food. Mother in law always brought black eyed peas for dinner but she is in the hospital now so that won't happen. We used to play games on the dining room table all day, board and card games but the kids grew up and the old folks have died, all but one so it is not the same at all any more. Now we just go out to eat and watch TV.'

Because Christmas was a sacred time ,midnight mass and family get togethers, nice food and gifts,(they were delivered by baby Jesus) not for wild parties, for us New Years Eve has always been the let your hair down party of the year, eat ,dance, drink, dance ,have fun, dance, laugh ,wouldn't dream to go home before sunrise !

Things have changed,NYE going out for dinner with a few friends and an Elvis impersonator show, never liked impersonators, but heck ! it's a fun night !

NYD day will not be notable, maybe just a little quiet!

I've never celebrated New Year's Day. When I was working at the university it was the last day off from the university being closed so I spent most of the day getting ready to go back to work....catch up on laundry, clean house, make something to bring to work for lunch the next day, go to the store and get a few groceries so I wouldn't have to do it after work that week. I have cooked black-eyed peas on more than one New Year's Day only because I like them and saw them advertised on sale in the grocery ads.

New Years has always been a cleaning day for me when I worked. I usually had to go back to work the following day. This year I have my mother with me so I'll be cooking her favorite meal she used to cook every New Years Day. Pork roast and sauerkraut, mashed potatoes and some black eye peas and corn bread for my husband who is southern and thinks the world will end without it. We have never had company for New Years.

After learning of the origin of New Years celebration - I stopped celebrating!

It was very interesting to me how so many (including me at one time) celebrate things we know nothing about.

The celebration of New Year's is never once commanded in the Bible. Jesus and the apostles never observed it. Moses forbade it! You may wonder why? Read the article I found:

Sounds like a fun day. Hope you enjoy it.

We usually have prime rib on New Year's Eve -- it's our Christmas present to each other. Instead of spending money on gifts, we splurge and purchase a big prime rib. Years ago, that was all we could afford -- either small gifts or a prime rib. Now, it's a tradition.

New Year's Day is spent relaxing now that we are retired. Used to be a day to get ready to go back to work with a slight feeling of despondence because you realized the holidays were over. Some joy that they were over but some sadness too. Now, it's a day to relax and give ourselves permission to do nothing!
